Step One: Test Your Concrete Surface Porosity
Paints, epoxy coatings, and other film forming sealers need to penetrate your concrete surface in order to adhere properly. If your concrete isn’t porous, and you apply sealer, then you’re in danger of it peeling away fast.
That’s why it’s critical you check your concrete porosity.
Fortunately, it’s quick and easy to do.
Just dip a finger into a glass of water and apply two-to-three drops to the surface of your concrete. If the water soaks in within 90 seconds, then your concrete is porous enough to be sealed with your new coloured sealer.
However, if the water doesn’t soak in within 90 seconds, and it beads on the surface, then you’ll need to open it up and create the required porosity.
You can do that by either acid washing or diamond grinding your concrete.
While prepping your concrete with those two methods is relatively straightforward, it’s worth its own blog post. So for now, let’s assume your concrete is porous enough to be sealed and move on to step two…
Step Two: Clean Your Concrete Free From Contaminants
Unless your concrete is brand new, it has inevitably accumulated oil, dirt, grease and other contaminants. When you seal over these ugly stains, you trap them in. That means your new coloured concrete won’t look so new!
Therefore it’s critical you clean your concrete before sealing it.

When your surface has dried, it’s time to move on to the final step.
Step Three: Apply Your Coloured Concrete Sealer
Once your concrete surface is open and clean, you can now apply your coloured concrete sealer. It’s time to inject some beauty into your concrete!
Pour the sealer directly onto your concrete in a ribbon like pattern – try to avoid pouring in large puddles. Then, start to apply it across your surface.
Most sealers can be applied using a 10mm nap roller, sprayer or solvent resistant broom. Try to avoid overlapping and do NOT over apply.
Two thin coats look more attractive than one single thick coat. After applying your first coat of colored or tinted sealer, allow 6-12 hours to dry.
Then apply your second coat.
We recommend you don’t walk on your beautiful new concrete surface for 24 hours and give it a full 3 days before you drive over it with your vehicle.
